Leigh Steinberg — the Real Life Jerry Maguire: A Conversation about the Business of Sports, Handling Huge Personalities and Overcoming Adversity
Leigh Steinberg is regarded as one of the most successful sports agents ever. Not only did he appear in the movie Jerry Maguire – the film was actually based on his successful career.
Steinberg has successfully negotiated over $3 billion in contracts for players including Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and Desmond Howard.
He has represented the No. 1 pick overall in the NFL draft a record eight times, in addition to representing over 60 other first-round draft picks in the NFL.
Steinberg sold his agency to Assante Group in 1999 for $120 million. But less than 15 years later, the world’s most powerful agent had hit rock bottom. Alcoholism and poor business decisions led to a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy filing. He lost his agency, his client list, his wealth – and his dignity.
And then Steinberg scraped his way back. Steinberg Sports has been created and is back to representing first-round draft picks.
Leigh will talk with EO about the ups and downs of business. He’ll talk about what it was like to be the most powerful sports agent in the industry and what it was like to lose it all. Leigh has given a considerable amount to charity over the years and has continued battled adversity and alcoholism.
We expect this event to be some great storytelling with some amazing takeaways regarding business resilience, growth, and blue ocean opportunities.
